Anti-wrinkle injections are cosmetic or medical treatments used to address the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Following a consultation to assess your suitability for anti-wrinkle injections, our Independent Nurse Prescriber, Caroline, may or may not recommend a prescription for treatment with Botox.
Botulinum toxin type A can be used to relax the muscles that are responsible for causing dynamic wrinkles, including forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet, and much more.
You may also be offered other treatments to address lines and wrinkles during your consultation that can be performed alongside –or in lieu of – Botox treatment, such as dermal fillers, polynucleotides, microneedling or skin boosters. Medical-grade skincare is always recommended too for skin health and to enhance treatment outcomes.

Botox works using a purified protein that is carefully extracted from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. In small, controlled doses as an intramuscular injection, it is safely used in medicine to relax targeted muscles.
Botulinum toxin type A temporarily blocks the release of chemical signals from the nerves to the muscles to cease movement.
This process is called chemical denervation; the effects of treatment are temporary. After a few weeks, the nerves naturally begin to form new connections, and muscle movement gradually returns over the following 2-3 months.
In the UK, Botox is licensed for temporary improvement in the appearance of:
Under the medical supervision and discretion of our Independent Prescribing Nurse practitioner, Caroline, additional off-label treatment options may be discussed during a consultation to assess your suitability for treatment.
These include treating concerns in the lower face, such as:
Dynamic wrinkles are those caused by repetitive movement of facial muscles when we make expressions or show our emotions using movements associated with smiling, frowning, being in shock, or squinting. As we age, all these repeated facial movements lead to the appearance of frown lines or eleven (11) lines between the eyebrows above the nose, forehead lines, and crow’s feet or smile lines around the eyes and the tops of the cheeks even when the face is at rest.
Dynamic lines can be improved by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for creating the wrinkles using anti-wrinkle or botulinum toxin injections.
The movement of muscles does not cause static wrinkles. They are related to natural ageing, which causes a loss of hydration, collagen, and elastin or volume in the skin, with some help from gravity. These create lines like nose-to-mouth lines or nasolabial folds, mouth-to-chin lines or marionette lines leading from the corner of the mouth, necklace lines on the neck, sleep lines at the temples, and creases on the upper chest or décolleté.
Static lines are best treated with other cosmetic injectables, including dermal fillers to add volume, skin boosters, Profhilo, or BeautifEYE & Bio Nutri Neck to increase hydration and improve skin elasticity and tone.
During a consultation to discuss treatment options for lines and wrinkles at BU Aesthetics™ in Merseyside, our Independent Nurse Prescriber, Caroline, will assess your wrinkles to determine areas of static and dynamic wrinkles and will recommend an appropriate treatment programme which may or may not include the use of a prescription Botox treatment.
Intramuscular Botox injections are given as a series of small, precise, dosed injections into the target muscles responsible for dynamic lines or movement in the treated area.
Treatments are often combined to address multiple areas, including the upper and lower face as well as the neck, for a balanced and natural result.
A review appointment is usually scheduled two weeks after the initial appointment to assess and determine the efficacy of the outcome and perform any dose amendments if required.
Male patients require a higher dosing level than females due to the inherent differences in the muscle structure between the sexes.
We will determine your suitability following a thorough consultation with our Independent Nurse Prescriber, Caroline. She will review your medical history, allergies, and medications to ensure treatment is safe.
Anti-wrinkle treatments are suitable for men and women of all skin types, so if you are generally in good health, you should be able to have treatment.
If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding or are under 18 years old, you cannot have treatment. Similarly, if you have damaged or broken skin in the area to be treated or an active bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, this must be resolved before treatment. Conditions such as neuromuscular disorders (e.g., myasthenia gravis) are likely to be contraindicated.
During your consultation, we will clearly explain the treatment, including its benefits, potential risks and side effects, and any alternative options available.
The needles used for treatment are very short and fine; many patients barely feel the injections. No topical anaesthesia or numbing cream is required.
Treatment with Botulinum toxin type A or Botox is well-studied in clinical trials for both medical and cosmetic indications and is considered safe with limited side effects and risks.
The effects of treatment are temporary, with muscle activity slowly returning to the treated area after several months.
Side effects following anti-wrinkle injections may include:
Potential complications from anti-wrinkle treatments are rare, but may include:
Such complications will resolve as the active Botulinum toxin wears off over time.
The results from anti-wrinkle treatments or Botox are not immediate. It will take a little time for the Botulinum toxin to integrate into the tissue and interrupt the nerve communications that ultimately relax the muscle movement in the treated area. You will start to notice changes within 3-7 days, but it will take up to 2 weeks for the full effects to be visible and for muscle movement relaxation to be at its strongest.
Over time, muscle movement will return, and the appearance of dynamic lines will increase once more, leading to the need for repeat treatment.
Treatment with Botulinum toxin type A is temporary. The results of anti-wrinkle treatment with Botox vary per patient.
Results typically last 3-4 months before movement returns, and the appearance of dynamic lines and wrinkles is more noticeable again. Repeat treatment is recommended every 3-4 months for most patients.
The frequency of repeat treatments is influenced by age, sex, wrinkle severity, metabolism, and activity level (some athletes may require more frequent treatment).
