Frequently Asked Questions

Your dermal filler journey begins with a thorough consultation with Independent Nurse Prescriber, Caroline. During this appointment, she will take a detailed medical history to ensure treatment is safe and suitable for you. This includes checking for any underlying health conditions, allergies, or medications that may make you unsuitable for treatment. A known allergy to hyaluronic acid, lidocaine, or a history of anaphylaxis would usually prevent treatment from going ahead.

Most healthy adults are suitable candidates for dermal fillers; however, treatment cannot be performed if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18 years of age.

We know that tolerance and sensitivity to pain varies by individual, and everyone is different. It is important for us to ensure that you are comfortable throughout your dermal filler treatment, whether performed using a needle or cannula. When injecting dermal fillers, some minor discomfort will be caused by piercing the skin and stretching the tissue as the hyaluronic acid gel is injected.

Thicker products used to add deeper volume can be more uncomfortable, and different areas of the face are more sensitive to pain than others due to the location of nerves, particularly around the nose and mouth. Therefore, and where required, a topical anaesthetic or numbing cream will be applied 30 minutes before treatment to numb the area and reduce any discomfort from the injections. This is usually offered for treatments around the mouth and lips, nasolabial folds (nose-to-mouth lines) and marionette lines (mouth-to-chin lines). Many dermal filler products we use contain a local anaesthetic (lidocaine) within the syringe that is delivered alongside the hyaluronic acid gel to ensure pain relief deeper under the skin, making treatments in the cheeks, chin, and jaw more comfortable.

So, you may feel slight discomfort during treatment, but numbing cream and lidocaine in the product help minimise pain. Most patients describe the treatment as very tolerable.

Yes — They’re made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin, which the body safely absorbs over time. Mild redness, swelling or bruising can occur but usually settles within 48 hours.

Serious side effects are very rare and will be explained by Caroline at your consultation. One potential side effect may be an outbreak of cold sores (herpes simplex virus).

If you have a history of being prone to the herpes simplex virus with cold sore outbreaks, we can prescribe preventative medication for you to take before your treatment appointment, especially if the dermal fillers will be injected around the mouth or lips.

Rare side effects include hypersensitivity or allergic reactions, the formation of lumps (granulomas), or infection. As an Independent Nurse Prescriber, Caroline has significant experience in complications management and can diagnose and prescribe medications, including antibiotics and hyaluronidase, if an adverse side effect occurs. Full aftercare advice will be given.

Results vary by patient based on the specific treatment undertaken. Dermal fillers provide an immediate result by defining, lifting, contouring, and augmenting tissue to reduce lines, wrinkles, folds, and depressions within the areas treated. By restoring upper face volume loss, you will see improvement in lower face areas due to the additional support and cushioning within the tissue. Depending on the areas treated, you can expect to look more youthful, with increased definition to your cheeks, chin, and jawline.

Expect to wait 1-2 weeks for the swelling to resolve and for the dermal filler to settle and integrate within your natural tissue. Over time, and with repeated dermal filler treatments, your own natural collagen and elastin will be stimulated to improve and support the area, reducing the frequency of maintenance treatments. These are usually recommended every 4-9 months, depending on the area treated and the specific product(s) used.

A review appointment can be booked to evaluate and discuss your results and treatment programme with Caroline two weeks after your initial dermal filler treatment.

Results typically last 6–18 months, depending on the area treated and your metabolism. Maintenance treatments are usually recommended every 4-9 months.

The thickness and composition of the hyaluronic acid gel determine how long it takes the body’s natural hyaluronidase to break it down over time.
