What is a non-surgical rhinoplasty treatment?

The nose is the most prominent feature on our faces and is often the area that can lead to the most unhappiness and a feeling of self-consciousness if the size or shape is overtly noticeable and disliked. A non-surgical rhinoplasty treatment uses dermal fillers to achieve a temporary, but long-lasting correction, change, or enhancement to the nose without the downtime and scars associated with surgical nose job operations.

Broadly speaking, treatment is aimed at correcting different types of nose shapes that often bother people and cause unhappiness to achieve a straighter, smoother nose. This includes cosmetic correction of a crooked nose, a hooked nose, a humped nose, a concave nose with a dip on the bridge, a wavy nose with several small indentations, depression, scars, or other anomalies along the nasal dorsum (bridge), or to counter a drooping nose tip.

Careful and artful placement of the dermal filler product often has the effect of creating an optical illusion when you view the nose, particularly from the side, hence, removing the domination of the imperfection, to achieve a cosmetic improvement that is somewhat life-changing for the individual.

How can dermal fillers be used for nose correction?

Hyaluronic acid is created naturally by our bodies to act as a moisturiser to maintain healthy joints and skin that is plump, smooth, hydrated, supported, and youthful. It attracts water to the tissue and binds with collagen and elastin. Our natural hyaluronic acid is broken down by an enzyme called hyaluronidase once it has done its job, with fresh hyaluronic acid made continuously by the body.

Due to its ability to attract water and plump up tissue, it is ideal for use as a gel in recontouring or correcting areas which lack volume or need support, to fill anomalies and improve features and contours. Dermal fillers are bio-compatible, synthetic forms of hyaluronic acid created into long-lasting gels for implantation by injection under the skin, in this case, on the nose for a non-surgical rhinoplasty or nose correction treatment.

At BU Aesthetics™ in Merseyside, we use hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers from Juvéderm, Teosyal and other well-studied brands.

Frequently Asked Questions

A non-surgical rhinoplasty or nose job procedure is also referred to as a liquid rhinoplasty. This differentiates it from a surgical rhinoplasty which uses surgical instruments, including scalpels, to alter the bone and cartilage within the nose, usually via the nostrils. A non-surgical approach is minimally invasive and uses hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers to recontour the bridge of the nose, fill dips to achieve a straighter profile, and disguise depressions, and other anomalies.

A non-surgical rhinoplasty treatment can be used to:

  • Smooth and correct bumps or indentations along the nasal dorsum or bridge of the nose
  • Improve and contour the profile of the nose to correct a crooked nose, making it appear straighter, or correct the prominence by altering and filling the junction between the nose and forehead
  • Give the impression of a smaller or shorter nose
  • Optimise the alignment and symmetry of nasal projection in line with the chin, from the profile view
  • Augment or increase the projection or elevation of the tip of the nose
  • Reduce or improve the appearance of a hooked nose
  • Improve and correct surface anomalies from trauma or scarring (although significant past trauma may be contraindicated)

At BU Aesthetics™ in West Kirby, we use dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid gels to perform non-surgical rhinoplasty procedures because these provide the safest option for the procedure.

We take a holistic approach to dermal filler and nose treatments at BU Aesthetics™, seeking to maintain a natural and normal look by restoring and enhancing your natural appearance. The aim is to adjust the profile of your nose to remove the concerns that bother you when you look in the mirror. This may be something that has always been a concern or which has appeared as you have grown up. It can help to bring old photographs with you if this is the case. The aim is to remove the imperfection that holds you back and to enhance your features. We may do this as a progressive treatment to allow you to become accustomed to the changes to your nose.

To ensure that you are a good candidate for a non-surgical rhinoplasty for the correction of cosmetic nasal anomalies, you will first have a thorough consultation with Independent Nurse Prescriber Caroline. She will take a full medical history to determine if you have any underlying medical conditions or known allergies or are taking any medication that could make you unsuitable or contraindicated for treatment. A history of allergy to hyaluronic acid, lidocaine, or anaphylaxis is likely to be contraindicated. You will also need to share past experiences with treatment to your nose, including both previous surgical and non-surgical interventions, and any significant trauma you may have experienced to your nose, such as a broken nose. Depending on this history and the changes brought to your nose, you may or may not be contraindicated for treatment.

The treatment uses hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler products and is suitable for men and women of all skin types (colours), so if you are generally in good health, you should be able to have treatment.

If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, you cannot have treatment. If you are under 18 years old, you also cannot have treatment, even with parental consent. It is against the law for under 18s to have dermal filler and lip filler treatments, so please do not enquire if you are underaged.

Similarly, if you have damaged or broken skin in the area to be treated or an active bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, this must be resolved before treatment.

It is important that you discuss what you hope to achieve from a non-surgical approach to nose correction using dermal fillers so we can evaluate if it is the right treatment for your concerns. There are limitations to a non-surgical approach, and if treatment cannot achieve your goals, you will be advised to seek a referral for a surgical solution. All aspects of treatment, including any risks, will be fully explained during your consultation, allowing you to book your treatment appointment or have some time to go away and think about it. Few treatments are performed on the same day as your consultation appointment.

At BU Aesthetics™, Caroline, our Independent Nurse Prescriber, uses only clinically proven hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler products from brands like Juvéderm and Teosyal that have published scientific data to evidence their safety. These are non-animal, non-permanent, and fully reversible using a synthetic hyaluronidase medication that Caroline can prescribe in the event of an emergency.

Downtime from non-surgical or liquid rhinoplasty using dermal fillers is mild to moderate; you can expect to return to your normal activities immediately but may wish to take 1-2 days off work if uncomfortable. You should expect redness, tenderness, mild pain, and possible temporary numbness or bruising to the nose. Any swelling will increase in the first few hours after treatment. This is a natural body reaction to the procedure and may mean your nose appears more swollen for several days, in some cases up to a week. It should not affect your breathing ability, but may feel a little sore.

Rare side effects include hypersensitivity or allergic reactions, the formation of lumps (granulomas), or infection. As an Independent Nurse Prescriber, Caroline has significant experience in complications management and can diagnose and prescribe medications, including antibiotics and hyaluronidase, if an adverse side effect occurs. If you experience prolonged redness, particularly at the tip of the nose, significant pain, or areas of discoloured skin on or around the nose, you should inform the clinic immediately. Full aftercare advice will be given.

Results from non-surgical rhinoplasty are immediate, with a noticeable correction and improvement to your cosmetic nasal concern. However, you must allow time for the swelling to resolve, which will distort the result somewhat for up to two weeks. The results are not permanent, and top-up treatments will be required to maintain the correction.

Results from non-surgical rhinoplasty are expected to last 12-18 months. Repeat treatments are recommended every 12 months.
