What is Profhilo?

Profhilo and Profhilo Body are unique bio-stimulating or bio-remodelling treatments; they are not dermal fillers or skin boosters.

The hybrid cooperative complex of hyaluronic acid within the Profhilo products stimulates natural tissue remodelling to treat skin laxity.

How Does Profhilo work?

Polynucleotides are not the same as dermal fillers, which replace lost volume and contour or shape facial structures. They are bio-stimulators or bio-revitalisers, which, once injected stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin to repair tissue and restore skin elasticity and structure, as well as hydrating and reducing inflammation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Profhilo and Profhilo Body are unique bio-remodelling treatments.

Profhilo is based on NAHYCO® technology, which is a first-of-a-kind way of thermally stabilising and fusing together low and high-molecular-weight chains of hyaluronic acid, using heat instead of chemical stabilising agents commonly used in dermal fillers. This creates a patented, hybrid cooperative complex of hyaluronic acid that integrates quickly into the skin and for longer to hydrate and stimulate the natural remodelling of four different types of collagens and elastin to improve skin quality and elasticity for a tightening and lifting effect.

This combined action cannot be achieved with dermal fillers or skin boosters and is what makes Profhilo and Profhilo Body so different and revolutionary for improving skin laxity and skin quality.

Profhilo and Profhilo Body are used to improve skin laxity (saggy skin, crepey, or thin skin) and general skin quality in the face and body, including the neck, hands, décolleté, upper arms, knees, abdomen, or stomach.

Treatment is of benefit to areas including:

  • Overall facial ageing with cheek wrinkling, thin and poor skin quality on the mid and lower face
  • Under-eye wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes
  • Smoker’s lines and fine lines around the mouth
  • A crepey or wrinkly appearance on the hands
  • Fine lines or necklace lines and thin skin on the neck
  • Fine lines, crepey skin, and poor skin elasticity on the décolleté or upper chest area
  • Fine lines, crepey skin, and poor skin elasticity in the inner upper arms
  • Fine lines and poor skin elasticity on the abdomen or stomach post-childbirth or weight loss
  • Poor skin elasticity around the knees

To ensure the optimal injection of Profhilo, the treatment is delivered using a specific protocol or pattern called the BAP technique that includes several injection points (five on the face and ten on the body). The quantity of Profhilo within the Body product is increased to 3ml per syringe to take account of the larger area, compared to a 2ml syringe for face treatments.

Profhilo cannot be placed properly without first learning the precise technique and how the treatment works best during an authorised training course. BU Aesthetics™’ Independent Nurse Prescriber Caroline, based in West Kirby, near Liverpool has undergone fully approved training to ensure the correct delivery of Profhilo products to get the best results for you.

The treatment is performed in two sessions, spaced four weeks apart. This is to allow it time to stimulate the natural bio-remodelling process within the tissue – remember, it does not have a filling effect like dermal fillers, but helps your body to naturally improve the skin. The first treatment session initiates the bio-remodelling process, and the second boosts the effect and ensures the longevity of the stimulation and your results. It is important that you attend both treatment sessions to get the best results. In some cases, particularly if you have very poor skin elasticity, a third treatment session may be recommended at 8 weeks.

The Profhilo Body treatment differs slightly and includes a Profhilo Figura body patch that is enriched with low and high-molecular weight hyaluronic acid, arnica montana, salvia haenkei (a type of sage), and pineapple extract. This is applied after the two treatment sessions to soothe and moisturise the skin. You will also receive Profhilo body cream to apply at home during the four-week interval between treatment sessions. The body cream contains hyaluronic acid and Matrixyl® 3000 to further hydrate, firm, and tone the skin.

To determine your suitability for Profhilo or Profhilo Body treatment, you will have a thorough consultation with Independent Nurse Prescriber Caroline. She will take a full medical history to determine if you have any underlying medical conditions or known allergies or are taking any medication that could make you unsuitable or contraindicated for treatment. A history of allergy to hyaluronic acid is likely to be contraindicated.

Profhilo treatment is suitable for men and women of all skin types (colours), so if you are generally in good health, you should be able to have treatment.

If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding or are under 18 years old, you cannot have treatment. Similarly, if you have damaged or broken skin in the area to be treated or an active bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, this must be resolved before treatment. If you have a history of being prone to the herpes simplex virus with cold sore outbreaks, we can prescribe preventative medication for you to take before your treatment appointment, especially if Profhilo is being used in the face.

It is important that you discuss what you hope to achieve from Profhilo or Profhilo Body treatment so we can evaluate if it is the right treatment for your concerns. Profhilo is not a dermal filler. It will not augment nor add volume or definition to the face or body. If you seek to improve facial contours or fill deep folds, you may be recommended alternative treatments, including dermal fillers or prescription botulinum toxin, during a consultation to discuss your best options for treatment. If you are concerned about poor skin quality and elasticity either on the face or body, then Profhilo or Profhilo Body may be the answer for you. Facial treatment with Profhilo can be combined with other treatments to achieve full-face rejuvenation.

All aspects of treatment, including any risks, will be fully explained during the consultation, allowing you to book your treatment appointment or have some time to go away and think about it. Few treatments are performed on the same day as your consultation appointment.

The hyaluronic acid in Profhilo products is much thinner than the gels in dermal filler products. This means that the product spreads quickly and easily once injected into the skin without resistance from the tissue or discomfort from skin stretching. You may, however, notice a brief stinging sensation during injection.

Most people tolerate treatment very well, and topical anaesthetic or numbing cream is not usually required. We will always aim to make treatments as comfortable as possible and understand that sensitivity to pain varies by individual.

Profhilo uses a highly pure grade of hyaluronic acid, which is stabilised during manufacturing using heat rather than chemical additives. Unlike other injectable products, the lack of chemical stabilisers means that Profhilo causes much less inflammation after treatment, making complications rare.

Downtime from Profhilo treatment is minimal, with mild redness and raised areas or small lumps at the injection points that will disappear quickly, usually within 4-6 hours. The area treated may still feel tender for 24-72 hours. Full aftercare advice will be provided.

Profhilo has a bio-remodelling effect by stimulating natural repair within the tissue. Results will vary by patient and depend on the level of skin laxity at the start of treatment. However, ongoing treatments over time will continue to improve results further.

You will not see immediate changes or improvements post-treatment because the action of the hyaluronic acid is not the same as dermal fillers that cause a filling effect. Skin quality will start to improve after 1-2 weeks, further increasing by your second treatment session and 4-6 weeks after due to stimulating your own natural collagen and elastin.

Data from the makers shows that after 28 days of starting Profhilo Body treatment, skin hydration was up by 42%, elasticity up by 9%, and there was a 52% improvement in skin firmness.

Profhilo is a unique injectable cosmetic product. Its hybrid complex of hyaluronic acid gives it an advantage over dermal fillers and skin booster products regarding the longevity of results. Combining the low and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid makes it more stable against natural hyaluronidase. Hence, the body does not metabolise the hyaluronic acid as quickly and can actively stimulate the tissue and new collagen production for longer.

Results for Profhilo are expected to last 6 months and up to 12 months for Profhilo Body. Top-up or maintenance treatments are recommended to prolong the improvements to skin quality and further improve skin elasticity with ongoing bio-remodelling. After your initial course of 2 or 3 treatments, we recommend maintenance sessions of either one additional treatment every 3 months, or two every 6 months.
