PRP For Skin and Hair Wirral

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is an injectable treatment that uses platelets and growth factors extracted from a sample of your blood to stimulate a natural wound-healing response to rejuvenate skin and restore hair loss.

This uses your own body’s cells to repair itself as a method of natural, regenerative medicine. At BU Aesthetics™, we use PRP therapy as a stand-alone injectable treatment, as well as in combination with SkinPen Precision micro-needling and Dermalux Flex LED treatment.

What is PRP therapy?

PRP uses the natural healing power of the components found in a sample of your own blood to help the body repair, restore, and rejuvenate damaged skin caused by ageing or sun exposure, and hair loss.

The concentrated platelets and growth factors within PRP provide a natural, holistic, cosmetic treatment solution.

How PRP treatment works

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is created from a sample of your own blood taken from your arm in the same way as a diagnostic blood test.

The tube containing your blood is spun at high speed in a centrifuge device to separate the blood components so we can extract the plasma concentrate of platelets and growth factors for reinjection.

Plasma is yellow in colour and often referred to as liquid gold because of its amazing properties.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

A new field of medicine seeks ways to help the body repair itself; this is called regenerative medicine and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. It is one of the treatments used to stimulate natural tissue regeneration.

We use it in aesthetic medicine for hair restoration and to rejuvenate and repair skin damaged due to ageing and exposure to the sun.

However, PRP is also used in joint repair with orthopaedic surgeons and dentistry for wound healing, which can be difficult inside the mouth.

When in the blood, platelets are responsible for clotting and help stop bleeding if we cut ourselves; the growth factors stimulate a wound-healing response so the cut is repaired.

These components found in blood plasma are incredibly useful and provide a natural treatment for restoration, regeneration, and tissue healing in areas affected by ageing, trauma, or hormonal changes.

PRP therapy can be used as a stand-alone injectable treatment or combined with other treatments that stimulate a wound-healing response, such as:

The plasma can also be combined with the delivery of hyaluronic acid for tissue hydration.

A blood sample must first be taken from your arm to create the platelet-rich plasma. The blood sample tube is placed inside a centrifuge device that spins it at high speed to separate the blood components, giving us a layer of red blood cells that we do not need and a layer of plasma concentrate.

The yellow plasma, or liquid gold, contains a rich concentration of the platelets and growth factors needed to promote regeneration, along with other core components like proteins used by the body to build healthy cells and stimulate collagen production.

Is Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy Safe?

PRP therapy, delivering platelet-rich plasma into the skin, is used in many areas of medicine and dentistry, as well as aesthetic practice, and is considered a safe and low-risk procedure because we are reintroducing components extracted from a sample of your own blood.

Therefore, the chances of an allergic reaction are much reduced compared to other injectable products.

Frequently Asked Questions

PRP can be used alone or in combination with micro-needling using the SkinPen Precision to address skin ageing with skin rejuvenation on the face and neck or for hair restoration.

Skin rejuvenation using PRP and micro-needling treatments for the face are often referred to as a ‘vampire facial’, popularised by celebrities like Kim Kardashian.

This combination treatment leverages the use of the SkinPen Precision micro-needling device to create controlled micro-injuries within the skin, which aids the penetration of the rich concentration of platelets and growth factors within the PRP to get the active ingredients to where they are needed.

At BU Aesthetics™ in West Kirby, we offer these combination treatments to patients across Merseyside to effectively target skin ageing and hair loss using powerful, holistic treatments combining PRP to promote tissue repair and new collagen stimulation, with additional and immediate hydration using hyaluronic acid, alongside the controlled trauma of micro-needling to stimulate wound healing.

Skin rejuvenation treatment with PRP aims to:

  • Improve skin tone and texture
  • Enhance overall skin quality and improve the complexion
  • Promote tissue repair and rejuvenation
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve skin hydration, plumpness, and elasticity (with the addition of hyaluronic acid)
  • Improve acne scarring
  • Achieve a more youthful and refreshed appearance

Hair restoration treatment with PRP aims to:

  • Nourish hair follicles to improve hair health
  • Enhance circulation to the scalp
  • Stimulate dormant hair follicles to re-enter an active growth phase to promote natural hair regrowth
  • Improve thinning or poor-quality hair

PRP treatment can be combined with hair transplant, both before and after the surgical procedure to maximise the benefits.

Please contact the clinic if you are considering undergoing or are already scheduled for a hair transplant to discuss the timing of PRP treatments.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy can be effective as a single treatment session, on its own or combined with hyaluronic acid and/or medical micro-needling with SkinPen Precision.

However, the real benefits come from a course of treatments to further stimulate and prolong the natural repairing qualities of the treatment to rejuvenate and restore age-related skin damage and restore hair growth.

During your consultation, you will usually be recommended a course of 3 or 4 treatments, depending on the indication being treated, spaced 6-8 weeks apart. This will be followed by booster or top-up treatments once or twice a year.

If you are generally in good health, you should be able to have treatment with Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy. However, certain blood, bleeding, or clotting disorders and medications that affect your blood are contraindicated.

To determine your suitability for treatment, you will have a thorough consultation with Independent Nurse Prescriber Caroline.

She will take a full medical history to determine if you have any underlying medical conditions such as anaemia or known allergies or are taking any medication like anticoagulants that could make you unsuitable or contraindicated for treatment.

Similarly, if you have an allergy to hyaluronic acid, you will be unable to combine it with PRP treatment, but it will not preclude you from PRP Therapy altogether.

PRP Therapy is suitable for men and women of all skin types. If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding or are under 18 years old, you cannot have treatment.

Similarly, if you have damaged or broken skin in the area to be treated or an active bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, this must be resolved before treatment.

It is important that you discuss what you hope to achieve from treatment with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy so we can evaluate if it is the right treatment for your concerns.

You may be recommended an alternative treatment like skin boosters or Profhilo, or additional adjunctive options, including SkinPen Precision micro-needling, depending on the type and severity of your skin or hair loss concern.

All aspects of treatment, including any risks, will be fully explained during your consultation, allowing you to book your treatment appointment or have some time to go away and think about it.

Few treatments are performed on the same day as your consultation appointment.

The first part of treatment is to take a blood sample from which we will extract the PRP. This is the same procedure you may have experienced in a GP surgery or hospital for a diagnostic test.

You may feel a sharp scratch on your arm as the needle is placed into the vein, but this process is usually well tolerated by most people and is over quickly.

Once we have processed the blood to extract the PRP, we can inject it into the area to be treated.

This can be performed with fine needles, but we prefer administering it using the SkinPen Precision micro-needling device.

To ensure your comfort during treatment, we will apply a topical local anaesthetic or numbing cream to the area 30 minutes before we start (while the PRP is extracted using the centrifuge system) to ensure a pain-free treatment.

You will likely only feel the vibration of the micro-needing device on the skin.

PRP Therapy, delivering platelet-rich plasma into the skin, is used in many areas of medicine and dentistry, as well as aesthetic practice, and is considered a safe and low-risk procedure because we are reintroducing components extracted from a sample of your own blood.

Therefore, the chances of an allergic reaction are reduced compared to other injectable products.

Results from Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy are not immediate because they rely on the natural wound-healing response of the body after placement of the concentrated platelets and growth factors in the target area.

Similarly, if your treatment is combined with hyaluronic acid or micro-needling, the body will be putting the cells to work producing new collagen and elastin, hydrating with the hyaluronic acid, and using the rich supply of platelets, growth factors and proteins to repair and restore.

There are parallels we can make between the action of digging over your garden, adding fertiliser to the flower borders, and giving it some time for the plants to thrive again and the flowers to bloom.

You can expect to see improvements after 2-4 weeks. Cell turnover and natural hair cycles take around 6 weeks, so you will soon start to notice improved skin tone and hair quality as your body repairs and restores from within.

Repeated treatments after 6-8 weeks over the course of a treatment programme will continue to increase these improvements.

The longevity of results from PRP therapy will vary depending on the area treated, continued natural ageing, lifestyle, and future sun exposure.

After a course of PRP treatment, you should expect good results for at least a year, sometimes longer.

Like many treatments, to maintain the results, further improve the natural rejuvenation, and keep future ageing at bay, we recommend a top-up or booster PRP treatment every 6-12 months to continue to enjoy the benefits of skin rejuvenation or hair restoration.
