What is a skin peel?

The Obagi Blue Peel Radiance skin peel reveals beautiful, younger-looking skin. As a superficial peel, it is safe to use on all skin types and helps to improve, refresh, and brighten the complexion, leaving skin smoother, tighter, and more radiant.

Obagi Blue Peel Radiance skin peel can be used alongside a programme of Obagi medical grade skincare, also available at BU Aesthetics™ in Merseyside.

How the treatment works

Treatment with the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance skin peel uses predominantly salicylic acid as a superficial chemical exfoliator, removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin to stimulate new skin cells underneath.

Frequently Asked Questions

Obagi Blue Peel Radiance is a superficial skin or chemical peel made up of a combination of 20% salicylic acid, 2% lactic acid, and 2% glycolic acid, with a pH of 2.7. These ingredients work together to exfoliate and remove dead and damaged skin cells from the surface layer of the skin, leaving skin refreshed and renewed with a brighter complexion over time.

A course of four to six treatments is recommended for best results, but a single skin peel is also ideal and beneficial for boosting skin radiance a week or so before a special event.

The old, damaged skin cells will slowly slough off over the course of a week after treatment, revealing fresher, healthier, renewed skin underneath. Following a programme of treatments, the renewal of skin cells will brighten the complexion, removing blemishes, sun damage and pigmentation concerns. It also removes oils and reduces excess oil (sebum) production in those with oily or acne-prone skin, reducing acne breakouts

We use hyaluronic acid-based skin boosters, including the Teosyal Redensity 1 product at BU Aesthetics™ in West Kirby, Merseyside. As well as hyaluronic acid, Teosyal Redensity 1 contains a proprietary mix of eight amino acids, three antioxidants, two minerals, and a B vitamin, which work together to restore, hydrate, and nourish the skin. Unlike traditional dermal fillers, Teosyal Redensity 1 focuses on improving skin quality rather than adding volume, contouring, or restoring the shape of facial features.

Hyaluronic acid provides hydration, the amino acids are essential in the process of cell regeneration, antioxidants protect against free radical damage, minerals, including zinc and copper help protect the health of cells, and vitamins, in this case, Vitamin B6 is helpful for cell metabolism.

By improving hydration within the skin, we can enhance skin quality, density, and elasticity, restoring texture, tone, and radiance to achieve a more youthful, glowing appearance. Teosyal Redensity 1 is suitable for treating the face, neck, hands, décolleté or chest area. The product is delivered using a micro-injection technique.

We take a holistic approach to aesthetic treatments at BU Aesthetics™, seeking to maintain a natural look by restoring, rejuvenating, and enhancing your natural appearance. We can achieve this and create the best version of you by combining treatments, including skin boosters with dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle solutions for a full facial rejuvenation approach to ‘turn back the clock’ and enhance your facial features.

We use skin boosters and Teosyal Redensity 1 to:

  • Improve skin hydration, elasticity, density, tone, and texture to restore thin, damaged skin.
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and tighten skin through improved hydration and a reduction in skin dryness.
  • Create a smoother, more radiant appearance.
  • Restore balance within the skin to stimulate and increase natural collagen production.

Skin boosters are best delivered as a course of treatment, with 3 treatment sessions of Teosyal Redensity 1, spaced 2-4 weeks apart, to gradually increase the hydration, nourishment, and improvements within the skin.

The main aim of Obagi Blue Peel Radiance is to brighten skin complexion, improving radiance and reducing blemishes. As a course of treatment, it can be used to improve:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage, including solar lentigos (brown, freckle-like spots)
  • Pigmentation and blemishes, including melasma (known as the mask of pregnancy)
  • Acne breakouts, oily skin, and acne scarring
  • Rough, uneven skin texture

Your skin is first cleansed to remove surface dirt and oils to help the skin peel optimally exfoliate the surface layers of your skin. The Obagi Blue Peel Radiance solution is then applied to the cleaned, dry skin in up to two coats and allowed to dry completely between coats, avoiding the eyes and lips. If a light peel is required, or we have concerns about tolerance, a single coat can be used instead. This remains on your face for a maximum of twelve minutes after applying the first layer. It is then removed using an Obagi cleansing product and rinsed with water.

A course of four to six peels, most often four, is recommended, depending on the skin concerns being addressed.

To determine your suitability for skin peel treatment with the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance you will have a thorough consultation with Independent Nurse Prescriber Caroline. She will take a full medical history to determine if you have any underlying medical conditions or known allergies or are taking any medication that could make you unsuitable or contraindicated for treatment. If you are currently on a skincare regime that includes retinol, AHAs or glycolic acids, you will be advised to stop their use for a period before and after your peel treatment. You should avoid using depilatory creams, waxing, electrolysis, or other forms of hair removal on your face for up to a week before treatment.

The Obagi Blue Peel Radiance is suitable for all skin types – including dry, mature, sensitive, or oily, acne-prone types – women and men, all skin colours and ethnicities. If you have dermatitis, inflammatory rosacea, or have used Roaccutane treatment for acne within the last year, you will be contraindicated for treatment. If you are generally in good health, you should be able to have treatment.

This treatment is often combined with Obagi medical-grade skincare products, Caroline will, therefore, ensure that any preparation required for your skin and skin barrier health before the application of an Obagi Blue Peel Radiance is prescribed in advance of the skin peel programme. If required, a patch test will be undertaken before full treatment.

If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding or are under 18 years old, you cannot have treatment. Similarly, if you have damaged or broken skin in the area to be treated or an active bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, this must be resolved before treatment. We ask that you avoid any form of tanning, including sun beds, for up to two weeks before treatment. If you experience a sunburn to the face, we will need to reschedule your appointment whilst the skin heals.

It is important that you discuss what you hope to achieve from treatment with Obagi Blue Peel Radiance so we can evaluate if it is the right treatment for your concerns. Depending on the type and severity of your skin concern, you may be recommended an alternative treatment or additional adjunctive treatments, including Dermalux LED.

All aspects of treatment, including any risks, will be fully explained during your consultation, allowing you to book your treatment appointment or have some time to go away and think about it. Few treatments are performed on the same day as your consultation appointment.

Whilst the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance solution is on the skin, you may feel a mild stinging or warming sensation, which quickly subsides.

The Obagi Blue Peel Radiance will increase skin sensitivity immediately after treatment, but you can still resume normal activities. Skin will appear red, pink, or flushed for 24-72 hours. You may notice a sensation of dryness, tightness, itching, tingling, or stinging. The skin is likely to peel or flake after approximately three days, for up to a week. It is important that you do not scratch, rub, or use abrasive skincare products on your face, as this can cause scarring and areas of pigmentation change. Similarly, avoid hair removal products or retinoids during this healing phase.

Because of the effects of the skin peel on your skin, it is vital that you avoid sun exposure to your face or tanning beds for at least two weeks after treatment. Your skin will be very sensitive, even with the application of SPF sun creams, and UV exposure could cause increased pigmentation and patches of darker skin formation. If you risk direct sun exposure on your face, you should wear a wide-brimmed hat.

You will be prescribed skin creams and sun protection to use at home between treatment sessions. Full aftercare advice will be provided.

You will start to notice results from your skin peel with Obagi Blue Peel Radiance one week after treatment as the skin is renewed and any peeling or flaking has ceased. You can expect skin to be clearer, with reduced congestion if you have oily, acne-prone skin. The skin will feel tighter with a reduction in pore size and an improvement to fine surface lines, and your complexion will be more even and brighter overall.

Improvements will continue throughout the course of treatment and beyond, although maintenance peels are recommended to keep your radiant glow.

Results from treatment with Obagi Blue Peel Radiance are expected to last 3-6 months. The skin peel is often used in conjunction with Obagi medical grade skincare as a bespoke skincare programme, which will include maintenance skin peel treatments as recommended.
