Dermaplaning is a technique used for advanced manual exfoliation by carefully gliding a sterile scalpel across the surface of the skin to remove the very top layer of dead skin cells (the stratum corneum) along with fine, vellus hair, common on the cheeks. This process removes the dull and damaged skin cells and peach fuzz hair, revealing smoother, brighter skin beneath for an instant glow of radiance.

Dermaplaning is a safe, non-invasive treatment that removes or exfoliates dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. It also removes vellus hair, often called peach fuzz from the face which can be bothersome for many women.
Treatment improves and brightens the complexion, removes fine hairs, and increases the absorption of other skincare products, topical treatments, or light therapies like Dermalux Flex LED.

The use of a sterile surgical blade in the hands of a trained practitioner means we can gently scrape away debris, dead skin, and troublesome hairs without damaging the underlying skin in a quick, gentle, and safe procedure. The result is brightened, glowing skin. It is suitable for men and women of all skin colours.
A Dermaplane facial has many applications for improving skin health and can be used as follows:
To exfoliate the skin – the action of dermaplaning removes the dead skin cells, dirt, and debris from the stratum corneum or top layer of the skin to reveal the fresher, smoother, brighter skin beneath. It can help to reduce the appearance of very fine lines and wrinkles.
To brighten the complexion – the action of removing the top layer of skin can also improve overall complexion tone, removing dullness, and improving hyperpigmentation concerns, resulting in a brighter complexion.
To remove vellus hair – the action of dermaplaning also removes the small, fine vellus hairs often found on the cheeks. This type of hair, known as peach fuzz, traps dirt, make-up residue, and natural oils (or sebum), which can exacerbate concerns for oily skin types and those prone to spots. Removing the hair can keep the skin much cleaner to reduce breakouts. Similarly, many women dislike the appearance of the hair, so favour removal. However, this type of fine hair cannot be effectively removed with other common treatments like electrolysis or laser hair removal, making dermaplaning the best option.
To increase the absorption of skincare products – dermaplaning helps us to prepare the skin for the application of other topical treatments or light therapies to achieve optimal penetration of active ingredients into the skin layers, including skincare products from our Obagi Medical Grade Skincare range, skin peels (with Obagi Blue Peel Radiance), and Dermalux Flex LED phototherapy treatments.
Dermaplaning can be performed as a standalone treatment to improve skin radiance or reduce vellus hair before a special event, or as part of a longer-term skin rejuvenation or acne management programme with Dermalux Flex LED phototherapy. Repeat Dermaplane facial treatments are usually recommended every month.
Your skin will be cleansed to reduce surface bacteria. A sterile, single-use scalpel blade is carefully moved across the skin surface to gently scrape away the dead skin cells and vellus hair. This is done with a similar, controlled action that men may experience with a very close shave from a professional barber, but we are using a more precise surgical instrument. The dead skin cells and debris slowly gather in front of the blade and are removed and discarded. To achieve optimal removal, your skin will be stretched taut at times to allow the free flow of the scalpel without the risk of cutting or damage.
Before a Dermaplane facial, you will need to attend the clinic to have a thorough consultation with Independent Nurse Prescriber Caroline. She will take a full medical history to determine if you have any underlying medical conditions or known allergies or are taking any medication that could make you unsuitable or contraindicated for treatment. If you have certain skin conditions, such as active acne, eczema, or psoriasis on your face, you will be contraindicated for dermaplaning.
If you are generally in good health, you should be able to have a Dermaplane facial; they are suitable for men and women of all skin types.
If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding or are under 18 years old, you cannot have treatment. Similarly, if you have damaged or broken skin in the area to be treated or an active bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, this must be resolved before treatment.
It is important that you discuss what you hope to achieve from treatment with a Dermaplane facial so we can evaluate if it is the right treatment for your concerns. You may be recommended an alternative treatment or additional adjunctive treatments, including Dermalux Flex LED phototherapy, depending on the type and severity of your skin concern.
All aspects of treatment, including any risks, will be fully explained during your consultation, allowing you to book your treatment appointment or have some time to go away and think about it. Few treatments are performed on the same day as your consultation appointment.
Treatment is very gentle and pain-free, and you will not require any form of topical anaesthesia.
There is no downtime after treatment, although some people experience mild redness, dryness, or itchiness to their skin for up to 24-48 hours. You will be advised on appropriate skincare to help maintain skin hydration and sun protection. Full aftercare advice will be provided.
Results from a Dermaplane facial are immediate because we remove the dull, dead skin layer and hair to reveal a fresher complexion underneath. You will immediately see smoother skin with radiance, improved tone, texture, and brightness. This treatment is perfect for giving you a glowing look ahead of a special event; ideally, book up to a week beforehand to allow any redness to subside, and it is most beneficial as part of a regular skincare regime.
Results are expected to last 3-4 weeks due to the natural turnover of skin cells, which means a new layer will build in the stratum corneum, and any peach fuzz hair will regrow.
To maintain the results as part of a regular skincare regime, we recommend Dermaplane facials once a month. By consistent removal of dead skin and debris with dermaplaning, you will notice an improvement in the penetration of other skincare products and a reduction in oily skin breakouts.
